Until this week I never really understood why Rodgers and Hart’s musicals did
especially well in tough times. Where’s the gratification in watching others
have more fun than you’re having? But gosh, amid the profit warnings from
retailers, estate agents and one’s bank manager, it has been mightily
enjoyable following the models as they glide, sway and sometimes hobble down
the catwalk in dresses that take days to hand-stitch and shoes that are the
work of not one but three collaborating artists.

What type of fashion is the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints selling? “Pajamas,” said my husband. “His & Hers, Hers, Hers & Hers.”

Yeah, the big guy’s funny, but way off on this. The FLDS group is now selling their own particular brand of uber-modesty on the FLDS Dress Clothing Site. The site is one way the mothers are supporting themselves after their children were separated from them during the Texas raid on the polygamist sect, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

It’s easy to laugh off the group’s fashion offerings. Plenty of fashion people as qualified as Tim Gunn have poked fun at the FLDS group’s frumpy puff-sleeved dresses. But here’s my bigger question: isn’t controlling what someone wears (colors and styles are dictated by the FLDS leaders) just another way to control her behavior?

It’s a holiday weekend, so here are some beauty tips:

1. The secret to sunscreen is reapplication. We think swiping it on in the morning can last all day, but it won’t if we are out in the sun sweating some of it off. It’s good to reapply every three hours on sweaty, physical days.

2. Waterproof mascara won’t melt in the sun.

3. Skip the soft, pencil eyeliners. I’m finding mine melts just a couple hours into the day. Try liquid liner instead and set liner with eyeshadow. Or better, forego the liner and just wear mascara.

4. Avoid wet head, pull hair back into a loose bun or ponytail.

5. Don’t leave the house with a peeling pedicure. Swipe a fresh coat of paint on nails before you head outside.

I’m not a fan of new beauty products, I’d much rather keep in my beauty bag a staple of the best, tried-but-true products that stand the test of time. So I was pleased to see two of my favorite self-tanners named in Allure Magazines “Clear Winners” contest.

The readers chose Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel (about $26) as their favorite department store tanner and Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer (about $6) as their drugstore fave.

Clarins is my self-tanner staple. I love it because it gives my skin a natural glow (no orange here). I tried Jergens when it came out a few years ago and was surprised when it did what it said it would do (provide a gradual tan over the course of a few days).
